The research focus of Professor Thompson’s group involves elucidating connections between material processing, structure, and properties. His group utilizes a variety of state-of-the-art analytical microscopes that characterize materials from the atomic to micron-length scales to achieve these outcomes.  Professor Thompson is keenly interested in electron microscopy and atom probe tomography techniques to study materials from which direct comparisons to theoretical simulations are made
